Adventures in bafflement

So I've decided to start cooking recipes I'm not familiar with. Hopefully it'll be educational and fun and at least slightly edible. I've got a copy of The Joy of Cooking (you know, the bible of modern cooking), and I flipped through there to find the recipe for Saag Paneer, an Indian spinach and cheese dish. I hadn't touched this book in years. Anyway, as I'm flipping through it, I managed to find an unused condom between the last page and back cover. Uh? What kind of sequence of events caused that to happen? Did I have a long career in incorporating homemmade food and sex that I've managed to forget about?

That Saag Paneer recipe is kind of disappointing. I had to buy cheese cloth to make it, but it was kind of cool to think I learned to make my own cheese.

As for the condom, I'm betting a girl left it there.

Really? Hm. I figured making my own cheese would be a little ambitious, so I'm using the recipe I found here:

http://www.recipesource.com/ethnic/asia/indian/00/rec0027.html

Though I couldn't find any paneer around when I was shopping today. Wonder if I could make it work with provalone or monterey jack...

If you make it with provolone or monterey jack, you're just going to have melted cheese. The cheese closest to the consistency of the cheese in that recipe is ricotta. But I don't know how well it would work.

Did you check the expiration date?

Yeah, August 2006. So it's been there a while.

And a free condom! Woo hoo! Just the excuse I've been looking for to have sex! Because, y'know, going out and just buying a pack of condoms would have been too easy.

I'm sure you've been reminescing of times you had so many around you used them as bookmarks! Perhaps you should check your shelves.

You do realize that if Saag Paneer turns out well, you'll have to make some for us. ;)

Call me old fashioned, but I prefer the old Better Homes & Gardens cookbook--you know the one that's red and blue checkered. You have to buy the big hard back though, so it will sit flat.

Good luck with your cooking...and finding a use for your "find". If it was a bit older, and expired, you might have been able to use it as your cheese cloth. :)

Eeeew. I really don't want to think about the kind of cheese that would produce.

Well, all the "best" and most expensive cheeses smell like dirty feet (or worse) so I figured, why not?

Actually, I just thought it would be fun to gross you out!

Um, mission accomplished. Blergh.

Actually, the recipe does call for making the cheese via a cheesecloth, but I'm not that ambitious yet.
